När en 6-årig pojke omkommer i samband med en smitningsolycka på Isle of Wight svär hans mamma Frances att hämnas hans död. Frances inleder en privatutredning och nästlar sig in i den misstänktes liv samtidigt som en nytillträdd poliskommissarie börjar granska fallet på nytt. Serien bygger på Cecil Day-Lewis klassiska roman The Beast Must Die från 1938 och i rollerna syns bland andra Jared Harris.
Frances Cairnes begins her search for the person who killed her six-year-old son in a hit and run. DI Strangeways arrives on the Isle of Wight, hoping for a fresh start after the death of his colleague.
